Adele tops nominations for Germany’s Echo Awards

Adele’s world domination continues with three nominations at the April 7 Echo Awards, Germany’s equivalent to the Grammys.

She’s up for Best Female Artist – International, Album of the Year for 25 and Hit of the Year for Hello.

The British singer is the only non-German in the Album category. She is up against singer songwriter and TV personality Sarah Conner (Muttersprache), folk act Santiano (Von Liebe, Tod und Freiheit), nine million selling pop singer Helene Fischer (Weihnachten) who also got three nominations, and Sing Meinen Song, Das Tauschkonzert Vol. 2 from the hit German TV reality show.

Adeleis up against Taylor Swift, Madonna, Enya and Austrian pop star Christina Sturmer for Best Female.

Nominated for Best Male Artist – International are Justin Bieber, James Bay, Ed Sheeran, Mark Knopfler and the late David Bowie.

Other international names up in various categories at the Berlin event are Kendrick Lamar, David Guetta, AC/DC, The Weeknd, Coldplay, Iron Maiden, Placebo, One Direction, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Dr. Dre, Chris Brown & Tyga, Florence + The MAChine, Mumford & Sons and Motorhead.

In the latest Adele news, Glastonbury Festival promoter Emily Eavis has revealed she is trying to get the soul phenomenon as third headliner at this year’s event, alongside Muse and Coldplay.

There’s a gap in Adele’s touring schedule in late June, when the festival stages.

Eavis agrees Adele would fit the bill. “She would, wouldn’t she? It would be great to get her. We love Adele. She’s an incredible artist and brilliantly honest and funny and real and that’s what everybody loves about her.”

Whoever gets that third slot (Radiohead is also a bookies’ favourite at 3/1) will be announced in April.

Will Adele, who is prone to stage-fright, consent to playing a festival which last year drew 135,000 remains to be seen.

In any case not everyone seems happy with the idea of the soulster as a Glastonbury headliner. Hilary Clinton might have raved about Adele as “my go-to singer”. But comments on social media by Glastonbury attendees included “Coldplay and Adele. Euthanasia by music” and “If Adele ends up headlining Glastonbury it’ll be the most beige set of headliners they’ve ever had.”
