A primer to Kings Cross’ debut on the VIVID lineup

Vivid is set to hit the streets of Sydney once again, creating fun, excitement, crowds, and plenty of stuff to do. Of course, now is also the perfect time to hit up the streets, soak in all the atmosphere you can, and help prove that the legendary Sydney nightlife is far from being dead.

Of course, with so much to see, do, and enjoy in the city this year, you might just be a little confused about what sort of things are on offer. Well, we’ve had a look around and found some of the best things that Kings Cross is hosting its debut foray into the Vivid lineup. From cult cinema, to crazy themed parties, there’s bound to be something that will pique your interest.

Welcome To Kings Cross

The Kings Cross Hotel is holding its own little party to help kick off the events of Vivid on Saturday, May 27th. Given the name ‘Welcome To Kings Cross’, it’s described as a six-floor party across the venue, and will feature something for everyone. With genres for every taste, including classic hip-hop, pop, R&B, ’90s dance classics, and verified club hits, you’ll be hard pressed to make your choice.

For more information about the acts performing on the night, check out the Facebook event page closer to the date.

Hidden Sydney – The Glittering Mile

The World Bar will play host to Hidden Sydney – The Glittering Mile, a cabaret tribute to the “heroes and villains, poets, drag queens, witches and silver spade crooners who called Kings Cross their home.” Last year’s Hidden Sydney event sold out two seasons last year, so be sure to get in quick to witness this highly anticipated event.

Cult Sinema Australiana

Between June 1st and 17th, the Kings Cross Hotel will be serving up some of the finest selections of cult Aussie cinema possible. Curated by Jay Katz & Miss Death (Cult Sinema, Mu Meson Archives), each night will also be accompanied by discussions with special guests, including film academics, actors, and directors involved in the films. With films like Wake In FrightThey’re A Weird Mob and Sons Of Steel, this will be one of the best chances you’ll see to revisit some of the best films Aussie cinema has to offer.

Information about each film, the corresponding guests, and ticketing, can be found at the Kings Cross Hotel’s website.

The Coke sign transforms

Kings Cross’ landmark Coke billboard will be transformed into a show of lighting, colours and special effects to celebrate Vivid Sydney 2017.

It’s all part of the Vivid festival’s debut Kings Cross program, Vivid KX, which aims to celebrate Sydney’s historic precinct of performance art, immersive theatre, avant-cabaret, music, cult films and talking heads.

The Coke sign will feature a Characters Of Kings Cross image series by photographer Katherine Williams, with portraits of some of Kings Cross’ most famous locals, including celebrity chef Kylie Kwong.

Radical Sydney

Hosted by James Valentine, Kings Bloody Cross: Radical Sydney, will answer the question of whether or not Sydney is still radical. A gritty look at the days of the ‘ungentrified’ Sydney, this event hopes to engage folks in conversation about Sydney’s glory days, taking a look at political and bohemian ideals shown through “anti-conscription protests during the Vietnam War, resident riots in Kings Cross, anarchists in Glebe, Gay Rights activism on Oxford Street and Black Power in Redfern”. Definitely something not to be missed if you have an interest in events of this nature.

Be sure to check out the Hidden Sydney site for more details about the event.

Basement Parties

Every Thursday to Saturday from June 1st to 17th, the Kings Cross Hotel will be delivering some of the most amazing parties you could ever ask for. Keen on a party which pays tribute to the video game Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater? They’ve got you covered. Interested in a tribute to Hey Hey It’s Saturday? It’s already sorted. What about a Twin Peaks themed party, or a glam night, a Keith Haring tribute, or a celebration of the famous women who have made Kings Cross what it is? Slow down, all those things are happening, and they’re all going to be absolutely amazing.

Head to the Kings Cross Hotel website for more information regarding ticketing and dates.

Oz Rock – The Best Years

If you’ve ever spent your Saturday night at home in summer, watching ABC’s reruns of Countdown and Rock Arena, pining for those long gone days of Oz rock, then Oz Rock – The Best Years might just be for you. Featuring guests Richard Clapton, and INXS’ Kirk Pengilly, this event will take a much-needed look into the famous rock scene that called Sydney home back in the ’70s and ’80s. Definitely something to help make you appreciate the beautiful music scene that Australia has given birth to.

Make your way to the Hidden Sydney site for more details about the event.
