The Internet – Ego Death
[Odd Future/Sony]
Lush, dismissive of the neo-R&B popping up on each major label and utterly delightful, the Californian collective have raised the stakes on third LP Ego Death.
The five-piece are no longer bound to the new wave of R&B hook writers which surroundedthe soft-release of 2011 debut Purple Naked Ladies. In 2011Odd Future's Syd tha Kyd and Matt Martians (also of Jet Age of Tomorrow) first unleashed their textured take on gentle, narrative-driven soul. It was so far removed from the gaudy assault of OFWGKTA that it was lumped with Frank Ocean's Channel Orange cut Novacane and dubbed another Odd Future side-project.But with velvetyshowers in tracks like Under Control and Syd tha Kyd's slinky vocal refrain on Gabby (featuring Janelle Monae), Ego Death demands separation.
