triple j Pick of the Week – Chet Faker
On Wednesday, last year’s Hottest 100 winner and all-round nice guy Nick Murphy – aka Chet Faker – called into Matt & Alex on triple j with some exciting news; not only is the Melbournian about to hit the road to play his biggest venues to date on the east coast, but also to premiere never before heard track Bend.
Recorded as one of the 80 or so songs Chet wrote for his debut album, Bend was on the list to be included on Built On Glass all the way up until the month before the album’s release when it was replaced by the track To Me. Despite being a “B-side”, it is a solid piece of work that highlights some of the best facets of Chet Faker’s song writing: simplistic melodies coupled with incredible vocals that worm their way into your subconscious with each listen.
Chet also let it slip to triple j that he is currently working on LP #2 and is aiming for a more “heavily performance-based sound”, which should tie into his upcoming live shows well as he’ll be performing with an expanded band and will bring some special guests along for the ride. The triple j supported tour will see Chet Faker play the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne, Brisbane’s Riverstage and a special performance on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House; check out triplej.net.au for all the dates.
