Spotify expands mobile presence with new services

Spotify is expanding its mobile music experience, with plans to introduce services such as Spotify Running and the Now start page.

The Now start page is the latest change to the music streaming site; a service that learns the musical tastes of each individual user. The Now start page aims to serve users the right music throughout the day, with songs selected from Spotify’s in-house experts and the user’s personal collection. Recommendations will adapt over time, tailored to the user’s taste and mood. The Now experience will begin rolling out today to iPhone users in the US, UK, Germany and Sweden.

Spotify Running aims to be ‘the perfect running companion’ for users, selecting songs all tuned to the user’s running tempo. The tracks will be a combination from the user’s listening history, multiple-genre playlists and original running compositions written by notable DJs. Additionally, Spotify have teamed up with Nike and RunKeeper, so that Spotify Running can be accessed through both these apps. Spotify Running will be rolling out to all users from today, making it the most immediate feature available to Australia.

Furthermore, Spotify have expanded their services into more than music. As per rumours, Spotify will be integrating video clips and audio shows for the first time. This will allow users to catch up on current affairs or listen to their favourite podcast. Spotify will also suggest video and audio clips to users. There will be entertainment, news and clips from secondary sources including the ABC, BBC, Comedy Central, ESPN, TED and Vice Media.

Spotify will also launch their own Spotify Originals, a platform dedicated to producing exclusive content for users. These include Dance Move of the Day from Amy Poehler’s Smart Girl brand, radio shows presented by artists including Icona Pop and Tyler, the Creator, as well as the aforementioned Spotify Running original tracks.

“We're bringing you a deeper, richer, more immersive Spotify experience,” saidDaniel Ek, Founder and CEO at Spotify.

“We want Spotify to help soundtrack your life by offering an even wider world of entertainment with an awesome mix of the best music, podcasts and video delivered to you throughout your day. And we’re just getting started.”
