Brisbane City to receive lockout laws
The Queensland State Government is planning the implementation of 1am lockout and 3am closure times, as the Brisbane Times reports.
The current Labor state government intends to implement laws similar to those in place is Newcastle and Sydney to curb alcohol induced violence and anti-social behavior.
Queensland Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath is in full support of the proposed laws, stating:"Not only are these policies supported by the evidence, they're also supported by everyday Queenslanders. The Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education shows over 80 per cent of Queenslanders support 3am closing for pubs, clubs and bars and over 60 per cent support a 1am lockout."
Nick Braban, the head of the Valley Liqour Accord has conversely brought to attention the potential unfair damage that will be caused to venues and the economy.
"Anti-social behaviour is a cultural problem, not an operational one," he said."People will still engage in poor behaviour because of societal attitudes to drinking. Our concern is that closing the Valley down will simply kill small business, the majority of which are helping to change how adults consume alcohol by offering a quality over quantity experience.”
The news comes just three months out from the scheduled release of the governments review on the Sydney lockouts, which are still a highly contentious topic of debate.
