Screen Music Awards returns with Rob Carlton as host

Former Editor

Organisers of the Screen Music Awards have announced its return this year with actor Rob Carlton set to host.

Carlton, a film and TV veteran, and a Tropfest-winning actor and director most recently portrayed Kerry Packer in television miniseries Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo.

Emmy Award-winning composer Ashley Irwin has returned as Music Director for the awards this year. He will lead a live orchestra on the night.

“It’s both a pleasure and a privilege to be invited back to musically direct the Screen Music Awards. Having been away from Oz for 25 years, working on this show reminds me of the awesome talent that exists in Australia,” said composer and Music Director Ashley Irwin.

The Screen Music Awards, jointly presented by APRA AMCOS, and the AGSC (Australian Guild of Screen Composers), will be held at Sydney’s City Recital Hall on Wednesday November 12 with nominees announced mid-October.

The Awards are the only national event to pay tribute to television and film composers, highlighting achievements across 12 categories and covering documentaries, short films, mini-series, advertising, children’s television and feature film scores.

Nominees for 10 of the categories will be chosen by a panel of Australian film and television composers, and the winners of the Most Performed Screen Composer – Australia and Most Performed Screen Composer – Overseas awards will be decided through analysis of performance activity reflected by royalty earnings.

The International Achievement Award will be determined by the APRA Board of Directors. Previous winners include Bruce Rowland (who wrote the score for The Man from Snowy River), Lisa Gerrard (who scored Gladiator), David Hirschfelder (Strictly Ballroom, Sliding Doors), Bruce Smeaton (Picnic at Hanging Rock), Peter Best (Muriel’s Wedding, Crocodile Dundee) and Tropfest founder John Polson (director of TV shows as The Mentalist, The Good Wife and Elementary).
