triple j Unearthed Pick of the Week
Moon Holiday
Rid U
Studious followers of the Australian electronic music scene would already be familiar with the work of Alexandra Ward under her Moon Holiday moniker. Those zealots would know her 2011 EP that came through the-then fledgling Future Classic and the famous team-up with the label’s breakout producer Flume for his track Insane. Now Ward is readying her new EP Second Life and has uploaded the first cut from the release, Rid U, to her Unearthed page and I’m falling hard for it.
Despite coming almost three years since the first Moon Holiday release Ward clicks into gear from the outset as a frosty, robotic groove twists and whirs. With that chilly beat locked in place Ward is free to show how skilful of a producer she has become laying down an impressive tapestry of alien pitch-shifted vocals, layers and echoes. It’s really full and as all these noises ricochet around the mix it feels slightly frantic despite the track’s distant mood.
