Iggy Azalea rewrites US chart history, dethrones Lady Marmalade

Since the release of her debut album The New Classic, Mullumbimby-born artist Iggy Azalea has been making chart history in the US week after week, and overnight she has broken the record for the longest-leading Billboard #1 by a female rapper.

In early June TMN reported she became the second female to hold the #1 and #2 spots on the Billboard chart concurrently for multiple weeks with Fancy and Ariana Grande’s single Problem, where she’s the featured artist. In late May TMN reported she was the first Australian female artist to top the US chart in 33 years – the last Aussie to hit #1 was Olivia Newton-John with Physical in 1981 – and aligned herself with the Beatles as the only artists to rank at #1 and #2 simultaneously with their first two Billboard Hot 100 hits. Now, Azalea has rewritten history Fancy.

Azalea’s fourth single has overtaken Lady Marmalade (featuring rapper Lil’ Kim, Christina Aguilera, Mya and P!nk) having spent six weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

Lady Marmalade topped the chart for five weeks in 2001 and before that, the crown was worn by Lauryn Hill, who in 1998, had a two-week run with her track Doo Wop (That Thing).

Locally, Fancy’s high point on the TMN Hot 100 Airplay Chart was #8, where it currently sits. The single is sitting at #15 on the ARIA Singles chart after peaking at #5 and is #1 on the ARIA streaming chart where it’s sat for six weeks interrupted. On the Australian Spotify chart Fancy is also #1, having taken the top spot for seven weeks interrupted.
