Applications open for $50,000 Carlton Dry Global Music Grant

Former Editor

The Australian Independent Records Association (AIR) and Carlton Dry have teamed again this year for the $50,000 Carlton Dry Global Music Grant.

Last year’s inaugural winner, Melbourne’s King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, used the grant money to fund their US performances in Dallas, Chicago, Washington and at Psychfest in Austin and also put it toward the renting of a ranch in New York while they set to work on their March-released fourth LP Oddments.

David Vodicka, Chairman of the board of AIR told TMN: “The Carlton Dry Global Music Grant represents an incredible opportunity for Australian independent artists, and the richest cash grant of it’s type in Australia. Without the usual restrictions or acquittals normally required from a grant process, the flexibility for the winner in how they spend the funds means it really can make a massive difference to an artist’s career.”

Rob Elder, Brand Manager Carlton Dry told TMN: “Carlton Dry has always been a huge supporter of Australian music – For years we’ve been at Australia’s favourite festivals like  Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival and Soundwave. Last year we decided we wanted to support young local talent and the partnership with AIR and the creation of the Global Music Grant has given us the opportunity to do this. The $50,000 grant gives these young artists a chance to boost their profile overseas, which they might not otherwise have. This is pretty exciting for us.”

Applications are now open for acts whose music is either self-released or released by an independent label. The prize money must be used to fund tours, showcases, an album or a relocation overseas for further development as an artist or band.

Applications close September 1. The winner announced at the 2014 Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards this October.
