Third person dies following SXSW hit-and-run

The death toll of the vehicular manslaughter at SXSW is now three after a woman has died in hospital.

26-year-old Mississippi native Sandy Thuy Le was in critical condition when she was admitted to University Medical Center Brackenridge on Thursday night (AEST). Billboard reported police and hospital officials confirmed Le’s death last night. The Austin Police Department tweeted the news.

21-year-old Texan (and aspiring rapper) Rashad Charjuan Owens was charged with capital murder on Friday for the deaths of 35-year-old father and MassiveMusic employee Steven Craenmehr and 27-year-old Austin local Jamie West. West was on her moped with husband Evan when both were hit by Owen’s Toyota sedan. Evan was listed as being in critical condition when he was admitted to hospital Thursday night, he is now in fair condition.

Owens has also been charged with 23 counts of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle. Of the 23 hit, five people were listed as being in critical condition when admitted to hospital. His victim DeAndre Tatum remains in critical condition while another victim Grace Nguyen is in serious condition.

Owens was intoxicated when he plowed through festival attendees on 9th and 11th Streets on Red River; he was attempting to escape police at a DWI checkpoint.

Owens is being held on $3 million bail bond at Travis County Jail.
