Springsteen’s Australian tour grosses $26.7 million
The success of Bruce Springsteen’s Australian tour this month has placed him atop Billboard’s weekly Hot Tours Chart for the second time this year.
His stint through Australia from February 5-23 generated $26.7 million in ticket sales after sell-out shows in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne. The tour marks the second time Mushroom Group have brought him out, with last year’s 10-date Wrecking Ball tour taking in 47,796 fans and generating more than $25 million in ticket sales (Billboard). The tour grossed $145.4 million worldwide (Pollstar).
The Boss’ two stadium dates at Melbourne’s AAMI Park on February 15 and 16 saw 62,950 punters take in his 3+ hour show, his top-grossing stop on the tour so far. Springsteen is set to perform three more stadium dates, with two at Auckland’s Mount Smart Stadium on March 1 and 2 and at Hersheypark Stadium in Pennsylvania on May 14.
Springsteen’s 2014 Australian leg, which finishes up on Sunday night, was in support of his 18th record High Hopes. The LP reached number one in 14 countries, including our ARIA Chart and the US Billboard Top 200.
Springsteen’s manager John Jon Landau has previously revealed this month’s tour had been in the works since the success of the Wrecking Ball tour. Mushroom Group’s Michael Gudinski first pitched for Springsteen 30-odd years ago, however Landau turned him down and last year admitted to the music company head: ”We always wanted to work with you but you seemed too wild at the time.”
In an interview for TMN’s quarterly magazine (out now) Gudinski said: “Springsteen was something I’d been working out for a long, long time, so to see it come to fruition, and then to get on so well with John Landau – he walks into our building, and said ‘I love the feel of it, it reminds me of the original Atlantic Records’.”
Billboard’s Hot Tours Chart figures below show the artists’ weekly gross earnings, show dates with show and sellout numbers in brackets and the total audience number.
