Sydney’s 5 Seconds Of Summer support 1D on world tour
Within six months of forming in 2011, four teens from the Western Suburbs of Sydney could count 50,000 Facebook fans, 200,000 Twitter followers and more than five million YouTube views – all despite no record label backing.
By August last year 5 Seconds Of Summer had sold out two national tours and released a bedroom-recorded EP that charted at #3 on iTunes. Two months ago they relocated to London to work on a debut album and now 16-year-old Luke Hemmings, 17-year-old Michael Clifford, 18-year-old Ashton Irwin and 17-year-old Calum Hood have been announced as the support act for all 110 world tour dates with boy band baton holders One Direction.
One Direction’s Niall Horan said the group discovered 5SOS on Youtube last year, most likely through their cover of Justin Bieber and Chris Brown’s Next To You.
“We all knew straight away they were very special,” said Horan. “We’re so excited to have them on the road with us and we know our fans are going to LOVE what these lads do.”
5SOS drummer Ashton Irwin said: “Supporting 1D is going to be amazing. We still can’t believe how far we have come since playing our first show at the Annandale a year ago. We love our fans that have continually supported us and can’t thank them enough for getting us to where we are today.”
The groups will kick off the tour on Saturday at London’s 02 Arenabefore three more shows this weekend that will see them perform to more than 80,000 fans.
5SOS plan to release their debut record later this year.
