Second win for Mojo Juju’s ‘Native Tongue’ music video

Hours after Mojo Juju’s ‘Native Tongue’ was announced as Australian Music Video of the Year at last Friday’s J Awards, it went on to take a second win.

This was at the inaugural First Nations Media Awards which marked the conclusion of CONVERGE, the First Nations Media National Conference.

They also marked the official launch of indigiTUBE.

‘Native Tongue’ was up against Alice Skye’s ‘Friends With Feelings’ and Black Rock Band’s  ‘Struggle’.

The song was the title track of the album which provides an insight to Mojo Juju’s Wiradjuri and Filipino heritage.

Like the album, it was like opening her family photo album.

The video was helmed by Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore who met her during the making of her documentary Her Sound Her Story.

It was shot in a paddock in regional Victoria and features members of Elcho Island dance group Djuki Mala dressed in red jumpsuits and creating choreographed steps with the singer-songwriter, who is in a resplendent fur cloak.

She’s in the past rejected the video’s notations of Native American symbolism.

She told the ABC:  “This is very much about an Australian context.

“There are nuances around the First Nations, politics of First Nations people in this country that are so different.

“It’s very nuanced and I think you can’t just draw that parallel. You can’t just make it about that.”
