Europe’s biggest winter festival Snowboxx to debut in NZ, targets Australian EDM and sports fans
Europe’s biggest winter festival Snowboxx will make its debut in the southern hemisphere in the winter of 2019, staging in Queenstown, New Zealand for a week.
It is targeting both Australian and New Zealand music and sports fans.
The New Zealand area already has the Queenstown Winter Festival which celebrates its 45th anniversary next year but it says the newcomer is targeting a difference audience and has welcomed the addition.
Snowboxx takes place annually in Avoriaz, France has had sell-out success with a simple format: cruise the alpine slopes by day, and live music and DJs by night.
The acts it has booked in Europe have included Fatboy Slim, Basement Jaxx, Stormzy, Bicep, Grandmaster Flash, 2ManyDJs, Mike Skinner, Norman Jay and Fleetmac Wood.
The New Zealand edition will have major international EDM acts alongside names from Australia and New Zealand.
Dominating Queenstown’s 700 hectares of slopes, both beginners and pros will be catered for with two ski areas and the two spectacular mountains, Coronet’s Peak and The Remarkables.
Rob Tominey of Mainstage Festivals and Snowboxx promoter says: “We’re pumped to be able to bring the event to New Zealand for the very first time.
“Music fans in Europe have a selection of top-notch winter festivals to choose from but to date, skiers and boarders in the Oceania region haven’t been able to enjoy an event of this calibre.
“Queenstown’s unique location has enabled us to create an experience unlike any other in the world: next level Après-ski, epic late night concerts, world-class skiing and so much more.
“On top of all the music and snowsports action, adrenaline junkies will be able to get their fix with bungee jumping, sky-diving, canyon swinging, whitewater rafting and more.”
