Crowd-funding campaign launched as Spencer P Jones battles “inoperable liver cancer”

A crowd-funding campaign has been set up (here) for Spencer P. Jones who is battling “inoperable liver cancer.”

The NZ-born guitarist and singer is best known for his time with The Johnnys, Beasts of Bourbon and Paul Kelly.

The 61-year-old Jones was first diagnosed with liver disease in 2016, and benefit concerts were staged as he could not work.

According to his wife Angie, they assumed “all was going well.”

But they received an “unfortunate and surprise shock” in March this year when a scan showed a cancer tumour in his liver.

Angie added, “We are still processing this news. The sad news is that currently there are no treatments available for Spence due to the complexity of the tumour’s position.

“Spence and I plan to fight this to the end. We plan to beat the prognosis of less than 6 months.”

Spencer and Angie initially delayed announcing the results of the March scan as a respect to fellow Beast of Bourbon Brian Hooper who passed at that time.

They felt that Hooper’s wife Ninevah and children Ava and Charlize needed as much support as possible.

Angie, who faces giving up her job to care for her husband, added, “Spencer and I plan to keep positive. We got married shortly after his diagnosis in April after eight years together, which was a happy event for us.”

Jones was to play with the Beasts of Bourbon this month at the Azkena festival in Spain, but this is not going ahead.
