2016 ARIAs: Flume, Troye, dominate; Hall of Famers perform

Independent labels came out on top once more, taking out 11 of the 20 awards.

The indies took out the ARIAs forAlbum Of The Year, Best Male Artist, Best Female Artist, Best Dance Release, Best Group, Best Pop Release, Breakthrough Artist, Best Independent Release, Best Rock Album, Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album and Best Blues & Roots Album.

Future Classic lead with five ARIAs, followed by I Oh You with two, and Inertia, Wonderlick Recording, Chugg Music/MGM and Remote Control/Flightless, all with one each.

The evening featured performances from ARIA Hall Of Famers – John Farnham, Jimmy Barnes and Crowded House – as well as The Veronicas, Jimmy Barnes and Jessica Mauboy, Illy and Vera Blueand Troye Sivan.

Sivan, who was introduced by surprise guests, ARIA Hall Of Fame inductee, Kylie Minogue together with her fiancé, Joshua Sasse, performed his Platinum single, Youth which went on to win Best Video and Apple Music Song Of The Year, which was presented by Robbie Williams.

Violent Soho performed Like Soda before going on to win 2x ARIA Awards for Best Rock Album and Best Group.

The best was saved for last with Hall Of Fame inductee and 20x ARIA Award winner, John Farnham closing the show with his worldwide hit, You’re The Voice, which had everyone in the audience on their feet and singing along to Australia’s unofficial national anthem.

Crowded House – Neil Finn, Nick Seymour, Paul Hester, Mark Hart and Matt Sherrod – were inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame by Flight of the Conchords duo Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement.

In a fitting tribute, Missy Higgins and Bernard Fanning, two of Australia’s finest artists, performed two of the band’s biggest hits, Fall At Your Feet and Better Be Home Soon, before Crowded House, who have come full circle since receiving the very first ARIA Award ever presented for Best Video, took to the stage with a performance of Distant Sun from the bands 1993 album Together Alone.

ARIA Chief Executive Officer, Dan Rosen said:

“2016 has been an amazing year for Australian music and that was certainly evident by the incredible talent that graced the ARIA stage. The collection of tonight’s winners, nominees and performers highlight the world-class homegrown talent that we have here in Australia.”

The ARIAs using the hashtag #ARIAs which was the #1 trending topic throughout the event.
