Cub Sport Leads Album of The Year Shortlist at 2024 Queensland Music Awards
Cub Sport’s ARIA No. 1 LP Jesus at the Gay Bar is among the four titles shortlisted for the coveted album of the year at the 2024 Queensland Music Awards.
Announced today (April 4), the Brisbane pop act adds to their previously-announced nominations for the pop and electronic categories (for “Songs About It”).
Cub Sport scored three nominations at the 2023 ARIA Awards, and won for best independent dance/electronica or club single honors with “Always Got the Love” at the 2023 AIR Awards in Adelaide. Jesus at the Gay Bar (via Believe) opened at No. 1 on the national chart last April, for the group’s first leader.
Also competing in the 2024 QMAs AOTY category is Holy Holy’s Cellophane, Lastlings’ Perfect World and Go-Betweens co-founder Robert Forster’s The Candle and the Flame.
Organised by QMusic and supported by the Queensland Government, the QMAs will be presented April 17 at Fortitude Music Hall, in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley.
Also unveiled today are the finalists for the metro venue, regional venue and music festival, following a state-wide poll.
Competing for metro venue of the year are Fortitude Music Hall, Sandstone Point Hotel and the Tivoli; the shortlist for regional venues is Kings Beach Tavern, Solbar and Miami Marketta; best festival will contested by Gympie Music Muster, Battle of the ROCK Bands and Tablelands Folk Festival; and the accessible venue of the year finalists are Brisbane Powerhouse, Kingston Butter Factory Cultural Precinct and Tanks Arts Centre.
As previously reported, the QMAs heavy award has a solid lineup, featuring Caligula’s Horse, DZ Deathrays, These Four Walls and Wildheart; while Atticus Chimps, FELONY., Hallie and Jaguar Jonze will go head-to-head for the rock award.
“With over 5,000 votes cast for this year’s choice awards, already the energy for the QMAs is at a record high,” comments Brian “Smash” Chladil, co-founder of Oztix, partner and official ticketing agent for the QMAs.
“We’ve been proud sponsors of the QMAs for many years, and love being amongst the incredible emerging and established talent across our state.”
This year, notes Smash, is an “extra special” one, which marks both 30 years of QMusic and Oztix’s 20th anniversary.
The QMAs were launched in 2006 (then known as QSong) to celebrated the “brightest emerging artists and established legends” from the Sunshine State.
This time, 25 categories will be presented, with more than 70 artists in the mix, including The Jungle Giants, Hatchie, Tia Gostelow, Ziggy Alberts, Kevin Borich and Sahara Beck.
A 100-strong music industry panel voted for the 2024 QMA finalists, which includes categories for the contemporary classical & music for stage, children’s music, jazz, music for screen, soul/funk/RnB, world, youth, and video.
Tickets for the 2024 edition are on sale at qmusic.com.au.
