Ed Sheeran returns to #1 to break records as Kendrick Lamar eyes the top spot
Last week’s charts were the first time in 13 weeks that Ed Sheeran was not on top with his single ‘Shape Of You’, having been dethroned by One Direction’s Harry Styles and his track ‘Sign Of The Times’. Plenty of music fans were overjoyed, happy to see the end of Sheeran’s reign on top of the charts, and happy that we won’t be breaking Coolio’s record of most weeks spent at number one. Well, this week’s charts shows that just wasn’t meant to be.
This week sees Sheeran returning to number one with ‘Shape Of You’, beating the record of most week’s spent at number one on the Aussie charts, a record set by Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise back in 1995. Sheeran’s previous rival, Harry Styles’ ‘Sign Of The Times’ has fallen down to number five this week, allowing Kendrick Lamar’s ‘HUMBLE.’ to jump to number two, and Sheeran’s ‘Galway Girl’ to round out the top three.
The rest of the top 10 stays relatively similar to last week, with The Chainsmokers & Coldplay’s ‘Something Just Like This’ at number four, Clean Bandit’s ‘Symphony’ at number six, swapping positions with Lorde’s ‘Green Light’, which falls from number six to number nine this week. Meanwhile, while Lady Gaga sees a debut at #17 with her new track ‘The Cure’, Kendrick Lamar makes two debut appearances, with ‘DNA.’, ‘LOYALTY.’, and ‘LOVE.’ at #16, #20 and #29, respectively.
Aussie talent is still relatively scarce, with our first Aussie artist, Dean Lewis, making an appearance at #21 with ‘Waves’. Ryan Riback’s remix of Starley’s ‘Call On Me’ hangs around at #30, while Amy Shark’s ‘Adore’ falls two places to #34. Pnau’s ‘Chameleon’ reaches #37, and our last Aussie artist, Bliss N Eso’s ‘Moments’, sits at #43.
The albums charts continue Sheeran’s domination with ÷ (Divide) at number one, but shows an expected appearance by Kendrick Lamar, with his new record DAMN. reaching the second spot. They’re joined by Aussies Mark Vincent, whose A Tribute To Mario Lanza sits at number three, and Tina Arena, whose greatest hits compilation falls from last week’s second position to number four this week. John Mayer makes a debut appearance at number five with The Search For Everything, while the rest of the top ten stays relatively stable, with Ed Sheeran’s second record X reaching number nine on its 143rd week in the charts.
The Smith Street Band’s More Scared Of You Than You Are Of Me takes a tumble down to #17 after debuting at #3 last week, while Lee Kernaghan’s previous fourth placer The 25th Anniversary Album, sits at #18. Spit Syndicate follow closely with One Good Shirt Had Us All Fly debuting at #19,
While many other Aussies make it in by way of compilations and retrospectives, the Hilltop Hoods’ Drinking From The Sun, Walking Under Stars Restrung sits at #41, while both Flume’s Skin, and Kasey Chambers’ Dragonfly re-enter the charts at #46 and #47, respectively.
While the charts have themselves a new record holder by way of Ed Sheeran, and the albums charts still feature a fair representation from Aussies, we’re still waiting to see Aussies repopulate the singles charts once more.
