Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’ has broken a streaming record set by Drake

Yeehaw legend Lil Nas X continues to reach milestones with his breakthrough single ‘Old Town Road’. Last week, the track became the No.1 track in America, topping the Billboard Hot 100. Now ‘Old Town Road’ has broken a streaming record previously held by Drake.

X’s original version of ‘Old Town Road’, alongside the remix featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, has topped the Streaming Songs chart. Both tracks — which have been classified as the same song— have racked up an enormous 143 million U.S. streams. Breaking the record set by Drake’s ‘In My Feelings,’ which amassed 116.2 million streams on the week ending July 28, 2018.

‘Old Town Road’ is Billy Ray Cyrus’ first No. 1 single and his first top 10 single since his 1992 track ‘Achy Breaky Heart. As Pitchfork notes, ‘Old Town Road’ is the first No. 1 single with accreditations to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

This achievement comes two weeks after Billboard’s controversial decision to remove the track from the Hot Country Songs chart after it was deemed not country enough.

“Upon further review, it was determined that ‘Old Town Road’ by Lil Nas X does not currently merit inclusion on Billboard‘s country charts,” Billboard shared in a statement. “When determining genres, a few factors are examined, but first and foremost is musical composition.”

“While ‘Old Town Road’ incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.”
