Paul Sergeant reunites with AEG Ogden

Paul Sergeant has returned to AEG Ogden.

British-born, Melbourne-based Sergeant is recognised as one of the more experienced venue managers on the planet, having managed large-scale entertainment sites on both hemispheres since the early ‘80s.

After two years running his own company, Paul Sergeant Events (PSE) the venues veteran, is reunited with AEG Ogden, the Brisbane-based venues powerhouse, for a third stint.

Speaking with U.K.-based live entertainment trade title IQ, Sergeant said he would take on duties as director, special projects, ahead of a “rising opportunities across the Australasian region.”

Sergeant, who in 2007 was Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to the events industry, has long been a member of the AEG Ogden family.

In 2007, he was named GM of Suncorp Stadium, operated by AEG Ogden, before heading back to Britain two years later for a leadership role with the rugby club Scarlets in Wales. In 2010, Paul Sergeant started his second stint with AEG Ogden as GM of Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena (then Acer, and later Allphones Arena).

Later, in October 2012, he took the wheel at Marvel Stadium (then Etihad Stadium), where he served as CEO for three and a half years, then stepped away in 2017 to form Paul Sergeant Events, a niche events promoter and consultancy firm. PSE was wound up in March of this year.

All told, he’s managed or promoted more than 5,000 major events during his career.

“I am effectively coming home to my specialised area of venue management,” he says of his new appointment.

Led by its chairman and CEO Harvey Lister, AEG Ogden manages the largest network of venues throughout Asia Pacific. These include convention and exhibition centres in Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Kuala Lumpur, Oman, and ICC Sydney; indoor entertainment arenas including Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena, Brisbane Entertainment Centre and adjacent Sports Centre, the Newcastle Entertainment Centre, RAC Arena in Perth, and Dubai Arena; and Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

AEG Ogden, a joint venture between Australian-based interests and AEG Facilities, a stand-alone affiliate of the Los Angeles-based Anschutz Company (AEG), is also driving the new Brisbane Live arena and entertainment precinct.
