Calling all aspiring musos: Unisounds announce 2019 applications are now open
Emerging acts, start your engines because Unisounds is open for business again – and if you’ve never entered before, you should.
There’s a massive prize pool on offer, with this year’s winner taking away an international recording deal with Dine Alone Records (think Alexisonfire, Goldfields and the Dandy Warhols), plus recording & songwriting sessions, free PR, and even a new wardrobe.
So, what’s it all about? Well, having been around for over 25 years, the competition gives tertiary students from over 80 schools across the country the chance to get a leg-up in their music careers. Past winners include Hockey Dad, Moaning Lisa and Peking Duk, so you’ll be in good company if you take the big prize.
If you’re in a band, only one member needs to be enrolled at one of the eligible campuses, and all it takes is uploading a bit of music and info at the Unisounds website. If the panel of industry experts likes your stuff, you’ll end up battling it out with four other finalists at a live gig – already a great opportunity to impress, win or lose.
Each month there’s a new verdict from judges, and monthly prizes too, including mentoring sessions and merch packs. But right now there’s also a ‘wildcard’ phase that gives you the chance to get votes from your fans and friends, rather than just the judges. It closes August 1, and could be your ticket to the final, so if you back yourself as a chance to win, now’s the best time to enter.
Even if you don’t want to enter, you can keep up with what everyone else is doing by listening along to all the entries on the website. You might even find your new favourite band, or your next signing.
It’s all kicked off today, so check it all out at the Unisounds website, and good luck!
