Today marks a momentous day for the Australasian music industry as APRA AMCOS announces it is taking its annual APRA Awards ceremony global.

Australasian songwriters, composers and music publishers achieving artistic excellence and commercial success in international markets will be recognised in 2020 at the inaugural Global APRA Music Awards.

With categories and nominees announced for Awards ceremonies in Los Angeles, Nashville and London, APRA AMCOS is putting the spotlight on our homegrown songwriters and publisher achieving great things on an international level.

Categories for the Global APRA Music Awards are:

    • Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year
    • Overseas Recognition Award
    • Songwriter of the Year
    • Distinguished Services Award

Nominees for each of the four categories have been reviewed by an independent Advisory Group, with final determinations made by the APRA Board of Directors.

The three Awards ceremonies will take place in Los Angeles (26 February, at the GRAMMY Museum, Clive Davis Theater, hosted by Maya Jupiter), Nashville (1 March, at Clementine Hall, hosted by O’Shea) and London (6 March, at Ham Yard Hotel Soho, hosted by Georgia Mooney).

APRA Chair Jenny Morris said:

“The launch of the Global APRA Music Awards is a reflection of the incredible success that Australian and New Zealand songwriters and composers are achieving internationally.

APRA AMCOS strives to be there for our members in their creative and professional endeavours every step of the way, wherever they are, and I so look forward to celebrating their talent, ambition and all that they have accomplished at these special events.”

The events complement APRA AMCOS’ APRA Music Awards, APRA Screen Music Awards, APRA Art Music Awards), and Silver Scroll Awards and Song Awards in New Zealand, which recognise success and achievements locally.

The nominees for the three Awards ceremonies include Mallrat, Ruel, Alex Hope and Flume for Los Angeles; Sinead Burgess, Rick Price and Ruby Boots for Nashville; and Parcels, Cloves and Jordan Rakei for London.

Nominations for the Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year are based on key achievements during the calendar year, including album and single releases, charts, awards and tours/supports. Recipients can also be considered within the Australian and New Zealand suite of awards.

Nominations for the Overseas Recognition Award are reflective of achievements in the calendar year based predominantly on international single and album releases, international charts, awards and tours/supports.

“This award identifies members predominantly achieving international success and residing overseas. This award replaces the current award presented at the APRA Music Awards,” APRA said in its release.

“In all cases of nominations, the APRA members must be residents in the territory for a minimum of consecutive six months.”

APRA AMCOS has also revealed the hosts for each event with artist and rapper Maya Jupiter hosting in Los Angeles; the country-duo O’Shea co-hosting in Nashville, and singer-songwriter Georgia Mooney, of All Our Exes Live in Texas, taking hosting duties in London.
