Bandcamp Fridays extend through the rest of 2020

Bandcamp has announced that the platforms Bandcamp Fridays initiative will carry on through the rest of the year.

The Bandcamp Fridays initiative saw the streaming service waive their revenue share on all Bandcamp sales from midnight to midnight PDT on the first Friday of each month as a way to “put much-needed money directly into artists’ pockets” during the coronavirus pandemic.

The first instalment happened back in March. It marked the biggest sales day in Bandcamp’s history, bringing in $4.3 million in revenue — fifteen times the amount a normal Friday would traditionally make. With all proceeds going to artists and labels.

“Musicians will continue to feel the effects of lost touring income for many months to come, so we’re also sharing some ideas below on how fans can support the artists they love and how artists can give fans new, creative ways to provide support,” the company shared.

“It may sound simple, but the best way to help artists is with your direct financial support, and we hope you’ll join us through the coming months as we work to support artists in this challenging time.”

Following that historic sales day, Bandcamp decided to host the event each month thereafter. In the four Fridays that the event has taken place, fans have put over $20 million USD directly into the pockets of those who need it most.

“It’s a good reminder that Bandcamp Fridays are really an extension of what Bandcamp is about every day,” the platform wrote in a statement. “Thank you to all the artists and labels who shared their music with us, and the fans who spent their hard-earned coins to support the artists they love.

As there’s no foreseeable end to the pandemic, the service will continue to host the Friday sales day every month until the end of the year.
