Al Matcott signs with Converge Management, Believe: Exclusive

Al Matcott is ready for the next stage, and he can now lean on Converge Management and Believe to help get him there.

The Melbourne folk-rock newcomer snags two timely alliances, ahead of the release of new music.

With immediate effect, Matcott is represented by Converge Management and his works will be distributed by digital specialist Believe, TIO can exclusively reveal.

Converge Management co-founder Scott Armstrong was first introduced to Matcott in 2019. “I was instantly hooked by his voice, the intricacy of his playing and the overall ability to transport the listener to another place with his visceral storytelling,” he tells TIO via email.

“We’re incredibly proud at Converge to have the opportunity to work on this project and to play a part in sharing Al’s music with the world, hand in hand with our wonderful new partners at Believe.”

Armstrong also hints at “big things” coming soon. “Seriously,” he continues, Matcott has “got a wonderful body of work ready to go and I’m excited for people to dive in.”

Converge, the boutique management arm of I OH YOU, an affiliate of Mushroom Group, already features a roster that includes Body Type, producers Scott Horscroft and Konstantin Kersting, Lewis Stephenson, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, and The Belligerents. Armstrong and Johann Ponniah launched the business in 2017. 

The announcement of Matcott’s two new deals coincide with the release today of his debut single ‘Mediocre,’ via Believe.

‘Mediocre’ is accompanied with an official music video, shot in Gippsland with filmmaker Jamieson Moore.

Mick Tarbuk, Believe’s Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand, is equally enthusiastic about Matcott’s music to come. “I’ve known Al for a long time,” he says, “looking forward to releasing a great body of work to the masses.”

Formally a drummer and guitarist/singer in a slew of bands (Euphoriacs, Honey Badgers, Buried Feather), Matcott is now hitting his straps as a solo artist.

Matcott’s sound has been compared to Conor Oberst’s Bright Eyes Pavement and slacker heroes Pavement, earning him slots at Boogie Festival and Brunswick Music Festival.

Next up, he’s prepping a debut EP mixed by New York producer and solo artist Sam Evian.
