Calling all screen musicians: Screen Songhubs is coming to Australia
The screen music spotlight is about to fall on Australia.
Palomino Sound Recorders in Myponga, South Australia, is the destination for a special series of screen music masterclasses and workshops, set for Sept. 27-30.
Hosted by APRA AMCOS, the Australia Screen SongHubs South Australia is billed as a one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn from the best in the business of making music for the screen and games. And it’s the first to be held in these parts.
Composers and songwriters from both sides of the Tasman will also get an opportunity to create works for projects via supporting partners South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC), games studio Mighty Kingdom and IGEA (Interactive Games & Entertainment Association).
The chosen few will collaborate under the direction of Jasper Leak, the Emmy-nominated creator whose songwriting includes credits on Sia’s chart-topping albums 1000 Forms of Fear and This Is Acting, music for Amazon’s Transparent and Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why.
South Australia produces so much more than wine, rock and hip-hop. In recent times, the state has emerged as a goldmine for screen productions including blockbuster Mortal Kombat, Zac Efron film Gold, and Stan, HBO and BBC series The Tourist starring Jamie Dornan.
In 2019/2020, a record $146 million was reportedly spent in the state on drama production and post-production.
Also confirmed to participate in the Screen Songhubs is Go-Betweens great Amanda Brown (The Secrets She Keeps, Babyteeth); François Tétaz (Judy & Punch); Morgan Read of Mighty Kingdom (Peter Rabbit Run!, Wild Life, Shopkins), and music supervisor special guest Jemma Burns (Lion, Judy & Punch, True History of the Kelly Gang, Top of the Lake, Mystery Road, Eden).
The special event is an extension to the inaugural Screen Songhubs held in Los Angles in 2019. That event was curated by screen composer Ashley Irwin, with music written, recorded and produced for feature film Snake River and Charmaine Bingwa’s short in the shadows.
APRA AMCOS members creating music for the screen and/or games are invited to apply online.
