TMN congratulates marketing veteran JP on 30 years at Sony Music
Earlier this month John Parker, aka ‘JP’ celebrated his 30th anniversary with Sony Music Entertainment.
Currently Sony Music Australia and New Zealand’s General Manager, Marketing & Promotions and Artists Touring Division, JP has played integral roles in the major label’s promotions sector, taking out Promotions Manager of the Year in 1990, and in 1991 and 1992, his years spent working from Sony’s Melbourne offices.
In 1993 JP moved to Sydney to take up the position of National Promotions Manager and was promoted to Director, National Promotions & Publicity in 1995.
As a marketing linchpin within the company JP has overseen multiple periods of dominance in radio airplay and chart success; in 1998 he was presented with Sony Music Australia’s highest accolade, the Special Recognition Award for a particularly remarkable period of radio and chart dominance.
In 2009 JP took on the additional role of assisting and advising the New Zealand company on integration of marketing and A&R strategies in ANZ, and last year he was appointed to his current role where he has overseen innovative campaigns for local artists including John Farnham & Olivia Newton-John, Delta Goodrem and The Veronicas and international acts Bring Me The Horizon and R. City.
JP celebrated the milestone at Rock Lily, The Star, Sydney with his company colleagues, industry partners and his family on October 7. He was presented with a 30 year crystal award and gifts presented by Denis Handlin AM, including a signed and personalised South Sydney Rabbitohs jersey. The celebration also included personalised video messages from Rabbitohs player, Greg Inglis, and revered industry figure, Molly Meldrum.
Denis Handlin, Chairman & CEO, Australia & New Zealand and President, Asia, Sony Music Entertainment praised Parker on his 30 years with Sony: “John is a great example of someone who combines energy, creativity, intelligence, a tireless work ethic, passion for the music, a real competitive spirit, and a great sense of mateship and humour. John, congratulations and thank you for 30 years. I very much appreciate your loyalty and contribution to the company over all these years.”
At the event in Sydney JP said he felt privileged to be part of Sony Music.
“I am incredibly lucky to wake up every day loving what I do, and to play a role in the careers of our artists and their music. I’m privileged to be part of the amazing Sony Music family and my heartfelt thanks goes to all the people who have supported me on my journey.
“My special thanks and appreciation to Denis Handlin, who provides inspiration and leadership to our amazing team every day,” he added. “Denis is one of those rare individuals you meet that brings out the best in life. To work for one company for 30 years sounds like a long time, but it feels like I only started yesterday and I absolutely love what I do!”
TMN congratulates JP on his 30-year milestone with Sony and as one of local music industry’s most respected pundits when it comes to marketing and touring. We wish him all the best for his next chapter with the Sony family.
