Among the nominees for Best World Music Album sits ARIA winner Gurrumul (The Gospel Album) and Christine Anu (Island Christmas), while King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s Quarters! is up for Best Jazz Album.
Continuing ARIA’s recenttradition of commissioning a unique commemorative artwork to celebrate the Awards, this year’s creator is 2015 Archibald Prize finalist, Koori visual artist, Blak Douglas.
Douglas said this year’s design is based around “The unsung, the undiscovered, the forgotten and the excluded.”
“Only a very small percentage of talented musicians have their voices heard. Commodification… the make and break of the broadcasted voice,” Douglas said in a statement. “The visual metaphor in my design is the Thylacine. It's vocal frustration goes unheard within then treacherous landscape spiked with awards. A virtual minefield of opportunity. The road sign indicates the journey ahead. The rewards will come so long as there's enough fuel in the tank.”
Douglas follows commemorative artwork creators Ken Done (A.M.) last year and ARIA Hall Of Fame recipient, Reg Mombassa in 2013.
