Lawrence ‘Moonman’ Mooney abruptly departs Triple M Sydney Breakfast
Triple M in Sydney is down a Breakfast host, with Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) announcing Lawrence ‘Moonman’ Mooney won’t be returning, effective immediately.
The comedian helmed the Moonman In The Morning show, supported by Chris ‘Pagey’ Page and Jess Eva.
Last week, however, he disappeared from the airwaves with little explanation. Anchor Page simple told listeners Mooney would be away for the week.
Industry speculation and gossip then suggested Mooney may not be returning – despite his contract running through to next year – due to off-air tensions.
SCA confirmed his departure today, however did not offer an explanation.
“SCA announced that Lawrence ‘Moonman’ Mooney leave the Triple M Sydney Breakfast show today,” the short statement said.
“Mooney was a regular on Triple M Breakfast in Sydney and Melbourne, before officially joining Triple M Brisbane’s Breakfast show in 2016. He moved to Sydney Breakfast in 2019, joining Jess Eva and Chris Page.
“SCA thanks Mooney for his contribution to the Triple M Network over the past five years.”
In the most recent radio ratings, Triple M Sydney was stable on a 4.6% share in Breakfast.
Earlier this month, SCA announced rugby league legend, Mark Geyer (MG), would join the program daily from 7am to 9am next year. The former player and broadcaster had left Triple M Sydney Breakfast in 2017 to spend more time with family.
Triple M’s Drive host Mick Molloy is also set to depart the network, however he is staying until the end of the ratings year.
The mysterious absence of Mooney was discussed on the first episode of the That’s Entertainment! podcast, which can be heard below. The radio ratings and talent shake-ups potentially still to come start around 18:47.
