5SOS win “worst band” for second year in NME awards
Sydney’s 5 Seconds of Summer won the Worst Band category in the NME Awards for
the second year in a row.
They were up against One Direction, U2, Little Mix and Seaford Mods and Nickelback.
There has been no immediate response from the band to their latest achievement.
But after last year’s win, they gleefully retweeted the news to followers (and
got 55,000 likes). “I’m so damn happy right now,” Michael Clifford gushed, and
thanked everyone who voted.
In other Australian related news, Kylie Minogue appeared at the London awards to
present Coldplay with their Godlike Genius award. The band earlier said they had
been fans of Minogue since her Neighbours days, and that they had unsuccessfully
tried to include her in their proposed collaboration with David Bowie “which
didn’t come off so well.” Bowie had said to Chris Martin, “It’s not a very good
song, is it?”
It was not a good night for the Australians. Tame Impala lost out to Run The
Jewels for Best International Band, to the Foals in Best Album and to Slaves in
Best Music Video.
Courtney Barnett was beaten by Taylor Swift in Best International Solo Artist,
which also saw her nominated to Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Ray, Kanye West and Grimes.
