5SOS announce Sydney pop-up store, discuss concept behind new Youngblood video

As part of their Sydney show at the Hordern Pavilion, 5 Seconds of Summer have a pop up store on Thursday, August 9.

It opens for one day only at 238 Oxford St Paddington from 11am.

Drummer Ashton Irwin said, “One of the things I love most about 5SOS is being a part of creating extensions of our music, like merchandise that represents our fans and band.”

Following the Hordern show 5SOS’ Meet You There Tour heads to Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on August 11, Festival Hall in Melbourne on August 13, Adelaide’s Thebarton Theatre on August 16 and concluding at HBF Stadium in Perth on August 18.

The band have also premiered the video for Youngblood.

Filmed in Tokyo, it was directed by Frank Borin (Angel Haze, The Script, Tinashe).

Explaining the inspiration for the video, Ashton said, “There are many wonderful, interesting, and captivating subcultures all over the world.

“In every corner of this earth there are groups of inventors, visionaries, thrill seekers, and boundary pushers.

“These wonderful worlds that people have created, spread, and effect everyone that comes into contact with them.

“The Japanese rockabilly culture is that of a renaissance and a beautiful flare of passion for everything old and new and that makes this particular subculture so interesting and amazing to us.”

Director Borin said, “About ten years ago I was shooting in Tokyo and was walking through Yoyogi park when I came upon this huge group of Japanese rockabilly guys and girls.

“Every Sunday, they were dressed to the nines in full rockabilly gear, doing their hair out in public, taping up their decades-old boots, and dancing the day away to ’50s music blasting on their boombox.

“Flash forward to ten years later, 5SOS was releasing Youngblood and the band and I were collaborating on another video together.

“The band were really into the idea of highlighting the rockabilly crew and we hung out with them for a couple days.

“They took us around Toyko and gave us a peak into their world which really lent itself to the spirit of the song and ultimately became the video.”

5SOS is riding high following ARIA and US Billboard #1 album Youngblood.

The single of the same name has reached triple platinum, has spent multiple weeks as #1 most played song at Australian radio, spent eight consecutive weeks at #1 on the ARIA singles chart and has never been lower than #2 since release!

The Youngblood single has totalled cumulative worldwide streams of over 150 million.

It scored the top slot on Apple Music’s biggest pop playlist, Today’s Hits and Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits playlist, whilst the album’s first single Want You Back debuted at #1 on iTunes in over 18 countries earlier this year.

Youngblood joined the band’s self-titled 2014 debut and 2015’s Sounds Good Feels Good in debuting at #1 on the ARIA albums chart.

They are one of only seven Australian artists to have their first three albums debut at the top of the ARIA albums chart, joining Jimmy Barnes, The 12th Man, Silverchair, Delta Goodrem, Missy Higgins and Pete Murray.
