5 Seconds of Summer take out two MTV EMAs

Adding to their banner year, Sydney band 5 Seconds of Summer have beaten out acts including Lorde, Ariana Grande and Sam Smith to win two MTV European Music Awards, taking home the Best New and the Best Push Awards within minutes of each other.

Last month the band’s debut self-titled LP hit the half million mark in the United States. The LP also topped the charts in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, NZ, Portugal and Spain. 5SOS have four ARIA Award nominations under their belt; the debut album is up for Best Pop Release and Breakthrough Artist, while the track She Looks So Perfect is nominated in the public-voted Song of the Year category.

Ariana Grande won the EMA for Best Song with her ARIA #1 track Problem featuring Mullumbimby-born rapper Iggy Azalea.

One Direction were the big winners taking out three EMAs for Biggest Fans, Best Live Act and Best Pop Act, while Katy Perry took out two awards for Best Video (Dark Horse) and Best Look.

Held this morning (AEST) at the SSE Hyrdro in Glasgow, the MTV EMAs were hosted by Nicki Minaj, who took out the award for Best Hip Hop Act.

Ariana Grande, Charli XCX, Ed Sheeran, Alicia Keys and U2 performed.
