5 Seconds of Summer debut at #1 on Billboard 200

Western Sydney pop band 5 Seconds of Summer have stormed the Billboard 200, debuting at #1 with their first full length album.

The band moved 259,000 units in their first week of release according to Neilson Soundscan, making the release the third largest debut of 2014 so far and the biggest first week sales for an Australian band.

The group’s self-titled debut is also the biggest for a first full-length album and the largest for a group in almost eight years. It has also hit #1 in Mexico and Canada.

5 Seconds of Summer’s latest effort surpasses the success of their four-track EP She’s So Perfect, which debuted and peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 and sold 143,000 copies in its first week.

The band are set to release a new EP, Amnesia on September 5.
