With seven nominations, Rüfüs Du Sol dances to the top of the leaderboard for the 2022 ARIA Awards nominees, revealed Wednesday.

Amyl and The Sniffers and Flume are close behind with six nominations each, while Baker Boy, Vance Joy and The Kid LAROI bag five nods apiece.

Any number of pointy trophies would cap a remarkable year for Rüfüs Du Sol, the Sydney electronic trio of Jon George, James Hunt and Tyrone Lindqvist.

A dream became a reality last November when the trio headlined a series of concerts at L.A.’s Banc of California Stadium in support of Surrender, an album recorded during lockdown on the U.S. West Coast.

That LP went to No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart and the U.S. Heatseekers Albums survey, and earned the group their first Grammy Award earlier this year, in the electronic and dance category. The trio also appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone AU/NZ in June.

At the same time, Amyl and the Sniffers, with their take-no-prisoners style of pub rock, and led by the irrepressible Amy Taylor, have emerged as a global force.

Proof of this came with Comfort To Me, which peaked at No. 2 on the ARIA Albums Chart, cracked the top 20 on Billboards’ Top Album Sales chart, and earned the group a pair of nominations at the 2022 A2IM Libera Awards.

Flume is, of course, at the very top of his game and able to command headline spots on major festival bills around the globe.

The Sydney electronic music producer (real name Harley Streten) returned this year with Palaces, his third album, which arrived at No. 3 on the ARIA Singles Chart with more than 85 million streams.

A special livestream this morning (Oct. 12) revealed the 2022 ARIAs shortlist, and the forthcoming event’s co-hosts — ARIAs-winner Natalie Imbruglia, and Scottish singer and songwriter Lewis Capaldi.

The pairing will “recognise, pay tribute and celebrate the achievements of the incredibly talented artists and industry professionals in Australia’s music community,” reads a statement issued today by ARIA.

“I am beyond excited to be returning home to Australia to co-host this year’s ARIA Awards,” comments Imbruglia, the former Neighbours star whose 1997 cover of “Torn” has sold more than one million copies in the U.K., and is one of her five Top 10 singles there.

“Torn” appears on Left Of The Middle, which this November celebrates its 25th anniversary, “so it will be a celebration for me in many ways,” she continues.

“It will be a fun night with Lewis Capaldi as my co-host and honouring all the incredible Australian artists this year.

“Cannot wait to see you there on November 24.”

Those incredible artists will be recognised across 27 categories, and include Julia Jacklin, King Stingray, Gang of Youths and Luude, who each collect four ARIAs nominations.

“It’s been another transformative year for Australian music,” comments ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd. “As we return to a live event, in a venue entrenched in Australian music history, the 2022 ARIA Awards are about celebrating the best of what the industry is, has been, and can be in the future.”

This year’s batch of nominees “again reflect a diverse, representative, and inclusive playing field for Aussie music,” Herd continues, “something we are committed to championing for years to come as we help more Australians connect with more local music.”

Adds YouTube head of music, Australia and New Zealand, Marion Briand, “it’s an incredible line-up of homegrown talent, which we cannot wait to celebrate and share with new fans around the world on YouTube.”

As previously reported, this year’s ARIA Awards will be held Nov. 24 an in-person event at Sydney’s The Hordern Pavilion, on Gadigal land, with the action beaming out live in Australia on free-to-air Channel 9 and 9Now, and streamed to the world on YouTube.

The 2022 ARIA Awards partnership with YouTube is supported by the NSW Government through Destination NSW.

Industry tickets are now available here.
