Iggy Azalea makes Billboard chart history

Mullumbimby artist Iggy Azalea made history overnight as her single Fancy topped the Billboard Hot 100.

The track with British singer-songwriter Charli XCX is the first by an Australian female artist to top the US chart in 33 years; the last Aussie to hit #1 was Olivia Newton-John with Physical in 1981. She’s also the fourth ever female rapper to do so, following Lauryn Hill (with Doo Wop (That Thing)) in 1998), Lil’ Kim (with Lady Marmalade) and Shawnna, who featured on Ludacris’ track Stand Up.

Azalea (real name Amethyst Amelia Kelly) is also sitting at #2 on the Billboard chart as guest rapper on Ariana Grande’s single Problem. Consequently, Azalea joins pop royalty The Beatles as one of two acts to take the #1 and #2 spots on the Hot 100 simultaneously. The Beatles’ tracks I Want to Hold Your Hand held and She Loves You held the #1 and #2 spots respectively on February 22, 1964. The tracks held on their places for six weeks.

Fancy has also topped the Digital Songs chart in the US and on home soil it is currently sitting at #16 on the TMN Hot 100, #9 on the ARIA Singles Chart, #10 on iTunes and #12 on the Shazam 100.
