When will Australia get Spotify’s new subscription deal for couples and flatmates?
Australian subscribers to Spotify Premium could be in line for the streaming service’s new deal for couples and flatmates.
It’s trying to crack down on lost revenue from premium subs being shared by friends and family members, so it’s targeted those living under the same roof.
It’s currently being trialled abroad for US$14 per month, which is $6 cheaper than two individual accounts at $9.99 each.
The first markets to try it out are Colombia, Chile, Denmark, Ireland and Poland.
If successful, invariably it would roll out in Spotify’s major markets including Australia.
Spotify has adopted a “no comment” on when this might happen.
Thankfully the accounts are treated separately and allow the users to listen to the music they prefer.
This would, of course, be ideal in a household where one prefers death metal and the other country and western.
But in the name of togetherness, a Duo Mix playlist will be made available that mixes up the music tracks both enjoy.
On mobile devices, Duo Mix also provides two alternate versions– “Calm” for more mellow tracks and “Upbeat” for songs with a more thundering tempo
Existing Premium subscribers can upgrade to Premium Duo to add a second person without losing their saved music, playlists, or recommendations.
Spotify will ask for proof that both subscribers live at the same address.
Presumably, there’ll also be a special playlist of “just divorced” songs if the couple breaks up.
