University of Canberra giving away $10K in songwriting comp

The UC Vision Song Contest features a panel of judges including Tom Busby of Bubsy Marou, and Australian producer Matt Barnes.

The competition offering one songwriter $10,000, will also feature Ian Plaude, Director of Stockholm University’s Music department, and Alaskan singer Marian Call, as fellow judges.

Speaking to TMN, Busby said: “I’ve seen so much young talent on stage in the past year, but I haven’t had a chance to take in the music. This is a perfect opportunity for me to do that and a great song-writing platform for the contestants.”

Run by the University of Canberra, the competition is set to discover new songwriters and performers. Out of a pool of twelve shortlisted finalists, one winner will take home the Grand Prize award of $10,000. Additionally, a People’s Choice Prize of $1000 will also be awarded.

To enter, contestants must submit a video that shows them performing their original track. Songs must be under four minutes in duration and will be judged based on musical quality, appeal and originality.

“It’s all about the song,” Busby continues. “I’ll be listening for a great sense of melody, solid song structure and strong lyrics. The song doesn’t need to be perfect and neither does the performance, but potential for growth and development is important.”

Competition entry is open from 16th June – 15th September. Members of the public are encouraged to vote for their favourite entry, with voting open during 21st September – 20th October. The winners will be announced on 30th October.
