Twitter co-founder to launch online music magazine

Medium, the publishing platform launched by Twitter co-founder Evan Williams, has hired Jonathan Shecter to lead the launch of a new digital music publication.

According to sources in the US, the online magazine will arrive next month. Shecter is known across the industry for co-founding and edit pioneering hip hop magazine The Source and programming the Wynn Las Vegas.

Shecter spoke to Recode: “There is a loyal group of people that both love music and have the desire to explore their love of that music — to read about it, to talk about it. We’ll find them.”

In April 2013 Medium acquired online publication Matter, which specialises in long-form articles about science, technology, medicine and the environment.

Its founders, journalists Bobbie Johnson and Jim Giles, funded the project by raising $140,000 on Kickstarter in March 2012. Matter sold individual long-form stories for 99c and upwards on in its own website and via Amazon’s Kindle store.
