Triple J team with NIDA for music video competition

Former Editor

The biggest performing arts institute in Australia has teamed with the country’s biggest youth radio station to help upcoming acts gain exposure on music video TV program Rage.

Sydney’s National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and Triple J Unearthed will be the conduit for seven artists and bands who will have a music video created for them by NIDA’s directing, production and design students and aired on ABC’s Rage. The students have $200 and two days to create the clip.

NIDA Head of Directing, Egil Kipste says, “We have some incredibly creative students here at NIDA and this is a unique opportunity to make their mark in the Australian music industry, backed up by one of the most diverse music platforms, triple j Unearthed.”

The partnership between NIDA and Triple J is an ongoing agreement with Rage; over the past six years the partnership has seen Unearthed alumni Allday, Guineafowl, Bloods, Chance Waters and Little Odessa work with NIDA creatives on their videos.

“We’re really excited to be working with Unearthed again this year,” says Kipste. “We’ve already seen incredible work produced through this competition which has helped kick-start the careers of some really great artists and directors.”

Triple J Unearthed Music Director, Dave Ruby Howe says, “It’s like a forecast of the next wave of Australian artistic talent. Having a great music video is a vital tool for engaging new fans but it’s also one that’s often out of reach for artists at the beginning of their careers. Being able to draw on the experience and creative flair of the whip-smart artistic minds at NIDA is an invaluable opportunity.”

Entries for the Triple J Unearthed music video competition opened this morning at triplejunearthed.com. Applications close Sunday March 30 and filming will take place at NIDA between July 19 and August 3.

Triple J received glowing results in the first Radio Ratings survey of 2014. Released today, the report showed (among many wins) the station has more listeners that 2Day FM in Sydney and is the second most popular station on weekends in Melbourne.
