triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2018 is going to be the biggest in history

triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2018 is going to be the biggest in history

Get ready folks, we’re only days away from what is shaping up to be the biggest Hottest 100 celebration in history.

When triple j kicked off their first annual Hottest 100 countdown back in 1993, music fans likely had no idea that they were witnessing the start of what would become the biggest musical democracy in the world.

In its inaugural year, the Hottest 100 of 1993 attracted approximately 50,000 votes, with music fans voting Denis Leary’s ‘Asshole’ as their favourite track. Over the years, these countdowns have only become more popular, with the 2018 poll attracting close to a whopping 2.8 million votes.

Announced by triple j today, Sunday’s countdown has officially raked in 2,758,584 votes, an increase of 15% on last year’s participation.

Of course, the facts don’t end there, with triple j noting that the most common age for voters is 18, while 60% are aged 24 and under, and only 20% of voters fitting into the 30 and over category.

Likewise, 53% of voters are female, with 45% male and 2% non-binary/other/no answer also getting in on the actions. NSW leads the charge with 29% of Aussie votes, while VIC scores 23%, QLD 19%, WA 10%, SA 8%, ACT & TAS both 3% and NT 1%.

However, our international friends are also getting in on the action, with 5% votes coming from overseas and nearly doubling last year’s result.

The triple j Hottest 100 for 2018 is set to be counted down on Sunday, January 27th, with the Hottest 200 being counted down the following day. Or, if you’re feeling in a mood for throwbacks, you can also head over to Double J on Monday where they’ll be counting down the Hottest 100 of 1998.
