Tones And I, Billie Eilish rules YouTube’s ‘Top Trending’ charts for 2019

Move over fellas, ladies are the biggest drawcards on YouTube.

The global streaming giant today publishes its YouTube Rewind year-in-review, which sees female artists dominate its two key music video charts.

Superstar California teen Billie Eilish had the most popular music video on YouTube in Australia with ‘bad guy,’ a song that went to No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart back in April. It’s now clocked up more than 659 million views worldwide on YouTube.

Also, Ariana Grande makes two appearances in the top ten of Australia’s Top Trending Music Videos, at No. 3 with ‘7 rings’ and No. 9 with ‘break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored’.

All up, female artists take feature or lead roles in six of the top 10 music clips in these parts for 2019.

But it’s the emergence of Tones And I that really catches the eye. The former busker-turned-global-star sees her hit ‘Dance Monkey’ impact the Top Trending Music Videos list at No. 6, best among Australians artists

‘Dance Monkey’ rules Australia’s Top Trending Music Videos from Australian Artists, ahead of two clips by controversial drill outfit ONEFOUR (Spot the Difference and The Message, respectively. Another, ‘Ladz in the Hood,’ is at No. 9).

Tones appears again in the top five with her debut song ‘Johnny Run Away,’ opening at No. 4, while the clip for Guy Sebastian’s ‘Choir,’ winner of best music video at the 2019 ARIA Awards, completes the top 5.

Tones’ popularity with YouTube users hasn’t gone unnoticed with executives at the Alphabet-owned streaming platform. Tones (real name Toni Watson) was last week named as the first Australian added to YouTube’s Artist on the Rise programme, which aspires to support and help more artists get discovered at every phase of their career.”
