TMN RETROSPECTIVE REPORT: Streaming hits Australia – 2012
TMN celebrates two decades in this ever-shifting music industry by taking a look back at the key moments – both triumphant and tumultuous – in the Australian music business.
2012
STREAMING HITS AUSTRALIA
Streaming came late to Australia, relatively speaking. By May 2012, when market-leader Spotify became the first free streaming service to launch here, it was already entrenched in the progressive Scandinavian market, where it launched in 2008.
Competitor Rdio had launched in Australia a few months prior, in January 2012, but without the free tier that helped morph consumer’s listening habits. Two years on, there is a plethora of streaming services in the Australian marketplace, and the concept remains as divisive as ever – but one thing is certain, music on demand isn’t going away anytime soon.
