The Proclaimers head back for autumn run

After the end of their 2013 world tour, Celtic soul twins The Proclaimers took last year off to rest and write their next album. Their tenth album Let’s Hear It For The Dogs, out in April, came out to critical acclaim.

On their mammoth 70-date UK tour, some of the new songs seemed to get as loud a response as the hits I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles). Letter From America, Let’s Get Married and I’m On My Way.

Wednesday April 20: Canberra Theatre Centre Playhouse

They follow this up with four shows in New Zealand between April 22 and 25.

Their Proclaimers‘ second album Sunshine on Leith peaked at # 2 on the Australian chart and includes the deeply moving title track along with signature tracks I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) which was an Australian # 1 for four weeks in 1986 and # 3 on the ARIA Top 25 Singles Chart in 1989. I’m On My Way peaked at # 3 in 1989.

In 1993, I’m Gonna Be also soared to # 3 during a 6-month reign on the US Billboard chart after appearing on the soundtrack of the Johnny Depp film Benny And Joon, and I’m On My Way re-emerged in a pivotal Shrek scene in 2001.

Among their famous fans are Dr Who star David Tennant and Little Britain’s Matt Lucas, who said in the band’s Best Of liner-notes: “I find it hard to put into words quite how the music of The Proclaimers makes me feel. It makes me laugh. It makes me cry. It just makes me generally euphoric … Sunshine On Leith says more to me about my life and the way I feel than anything Morrissey or Cobain ever wrote.”

In 2007, a rousing collaboration with Lucas and fellow-British comedian Peter Kay resulted in I’m Going To Be (500 Miles) raising over £1 million for charity through Comic Relief. That same year, they sold more concert tickets in Scotland than any other single act whilst on their UK and Ireland tour of 44 shows, performing to over 100,000 fans.

The Sunshine on Leith album inspired the 2013 movie of the same name. Proclaimers music also appeared in The Commitments, The Crossing, Dumb & Dumber, Bye Bye Love, Bottle Rocket, Slab Boys, The Closer You Get, How I Met Your Mother, Mama’s Boy, Burke and Hare, The Angel’s Share, Identity Thief, Bachelorette and Grey’s Anatomy.
