SongHubs favourite Taka Perry joins Downtown Music Publishing
Downtown Music Publishing‘s Australian growth cannot be stopped.
Following its signing of Australian indie-pop artist Eliott last week, and Sydney singer-songwriter Evie Irie in July, the publisher has inked a global deal with songwriter, producer, and artist Taka Perry.
The Sydney-based Canberra-born, half-Japanese, half-American artist joins the roster with a host of feathers in his cap. Perry’s collaborations include Thomston, Ruel, KLP, Cyrus, Dean Lewis, Lanks, Mallrat, Woodes, SACHI, J Hart, and Max Frost, among others.
Meanwhile, the 20-year-old has a label deal with TMRW Music imprint Risqué for an upcoming solo project. And he’s participated in multiple SongHubs throughout Australia and New Zealand, including Sydney’s iconic 50 Songs in 5 Days writing camps.
Recently Taka Perry was a top 40 finalist in the 2019 Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition, shortlisted from over 3,900 entries.
Taka Perry said:
“I’m so excited to bring on Downtown as my worldwide publisher. The calibre of their work ethic is second to none and, from the very beginning, they have been creatively aligned with my career — both as a producer and artist.”
Taka Perry’s debut single ‘Introspect’ was released in July, followed by ‘Kuruna’ this month, which features Japanese rapper JP The Wavy. The pair were initially connected at Downtown’s Songwriters Without Borders initiative, which fosters global collaboration between the company’s songwriters and other writers, artists, and producers.
The initiative then saw Perry head to Tokyo where he worked with other Japanese artists such as Elle Teresa, Yoshi, and Duke of Harajuku.

Rachel Kelly, Downtown Creative Director & Head of Sync, Australia & New Zealand said:
“Taka Perry is a dream to work with. He is immensely talented — as a multi-instrumentalist, writer, producer, mixer, engineer, and artist.
“Taka’s experimentation with time signatures and instrumentation has developed into a unique production style. He constantly surprises me with his versatility — and his productivity is on another level. We’re so honoured that Taka has chosen Downtown to be a global creative partner for the next phase of his career. Watch this eagle soar.”
Daniel Anthony of Flagrant Artist Management, who represents Perry, said:
“The support, enthusiasm and attention to detail that Rachel, Taeko and the greater Downtown team have shown Taka and his music so far has been unbelievable.
“With Taka’s unique ability as an equally gifted songwriter, producer and artist, the publisher’s role is so integral for us and we couldn’t be happier than to have that role handled by Downtown.”
