Summer Camp to be Australia’s largest touring LGBTQ+ festival

Summer Camp, a new music festival focused on LGBTQI+ pride, will hit Australia next year and is set to be the largest touring festival of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

UK’s Years & Years and USA’s Big Freedia will headline, making Summer Camp one of the first festivals to proceed with international headliners since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Other local acts set to play include Cub Sport, The Veronicas, Confidence Man, Kinder and more.

The festival will kick off in Darwin on February 26, before playing dates in Melbourne, Sydney and wrapping up in Perth on March 7.

Summer Camp will be touring the country on Saturday, March 5, the same day the 2022 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade will take place at the SCG.

The event, co-founded by the creator of Heaps Gay, Kat Dopper, received funding from the federal government’s Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) grant.

“Summer Camp Festival is a new inclusive festival experience that accepts all the cuties,” Dopper said in a statement.

“It’s a chance to frolic in the forest with pals, dress up, and celebrate the true meaning of pride, Love has no labels at Summer Camp – it’s a place to call ‘homo’ this pride season.”

Earlier today, it was announced that the ABC gained exclusive broadcast rights to the Sydney Mardi Gras parade from 2022 through 2024.
