Stella Donnelly signed to leading indie Secretly Canadian

Stella Donnelly has signed an international deal with US indie Secretly Canadian, home to The War On Drugs, Antony and the Johnsons, and Yoko Ono – to name but a few.

“Stella was one of the artists I was most excited about seeing at Bigsound last fall”, explains Secretly Canadian co-founder/co-owner Ben Swanson.

“Her live show was stunning. With her clever, yet direct lyrics, Stella’s work is threaded with a rare mix of wit and emotion. I couldn’t be more honored to be working with Stella and cannot wait to hear what she unleashes on the world next.”

“I am so excited and grateful to be joining the Secretly Canadian family”, Donnelly adds. “I’m very grateful to be working with the people who, in turn, work with some of my favourite artists in the world and I know that Secretly Canadian is a nurturing space to write music and grow as an artist.”

The first release through the label is a reissuing of her excellent (and excellently-named) EP Thrush Metal. Check out the warped, weird clip for EP highlight ‘Mechnical Bull’ below.

“The song is dedicated to people who work in hospitality who have to deal with customers, especially drunk ones, harassing them and making objectifying comments,” says Donnelly.

“I wrote this about my experience working in bars and it was a nice way to release some of the frustration I had!”

She’ll also be doubling down on this international interest by hitting up SXSW next month, before returning for a May tour with triple j fave Alex The Astronaut.
