Alice Ivy, Bic Runga, Jordan Rakei Feature in New SongHubs Documentary

Alice Ivy, Bic Runga, Jordan Rakei and others are featured in SongHubs: A Story on Collaboration, a new documentary from APRA AMCOS spotlighting songwriters and producers across Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond.

Filmed to mark SongHubs’ 100th session, the documentary offers a look inside important creative pairings over the past 11 years, with artists from Auckland, London, Melbourne, Sydney and the Torres Straits, including Alice Ivy, AR/CO, Bic Runga, Chris Tamwoy, Jordan Rakei, Josh Fountain and Telenova.

Jordan Rakei, Ivor Novello-nominated singer/songwriter and producer, says SongHubs inspired his album The Loop.  “The Loop was a massive collaboration album,” he explains. “That was actually inspired by my time with the cross-collaboration with APRA AMCOS and SongHubs. I can’t really do a solo album anymore, I just love collaborating.”

Angeline Armstrong from Telenova, the trio that formed at a SongHubs session in Melbourne in 2019 before signing with EMI, reflects on that moment: “It’s really funny to think about what if we weren’t put in a room together or I just wasn’t free the day that we were going to be doing a session and then I met up with someone else. I’m so glad that we did because I’m so proud of the music that we make.”

Alice Ivy sums it up: “I feel like (with) collaboration you’re putting your best skills to the table and the other person in the room or the other people in the room are putting their best skills to the table. You are making something so big and so special… and you can take those skills away and you can utilise them and use that in your practice in future years.”

Since 2013, SongHubs has connected over 2,000 songwriters across 30+ locations worldwide, pairing them with local, national and international creatives in professional studio settings.

More than 6,000 tracks have been made through SongHubs, featuring artists like Briggs, CHAII, Courtney Barnett, GFlip, Lindsay Rimes, Sarah Aarons and Troye Sivan.

Adam Townsend, APRA AMCOS Director of Writer Services, says, “SongHubs offers a unique collaborative experience, opening doors for songwriters who might not otherwise have access. It’s great to celebrate what’s been achieved so far and look ahead to future sessions in Brisbane, Nashville and Sydney.”
