Red Bull Soundselect returns to Sydney in 2017

Red Bull Sound Select successfully launched in Sydney last year with monthly, intimate events quickly becoming the go-to showcase for up and coming Australian talent. After rounding out 2016 at Beach Road Hotel in Bondi with the help of Confidence Man, Andras & Oscar and Total Giovanni, today the esteemed live music series announces the first Sydney show for 2017 – and the lineup is truly befitting of its location. Hosted in the divine surrounds of the Paddington Uniting Church on January 27, New York’s rising star Kelsey Lu headlines, joined by local artists Jack Grace and Bec Sandridge for a transcending start to the New Year.
Red Bull Sound Select is a monthly program curated by some of Australia’s most respected industry figures. I OH YOU’s Johann Ponniah and Laneway Festival’s Travis Banko return again for 2017, with the addition of Sydney tastemaker station, FBi Radio, to the team of curators tasked with pairing established artists with breaking talent, supporting and nurturing live music discovery.
This January, Banko takes the reigns in what is set to be an immaculate evening. Live music venues have long been a place for spiritual experience and emotional unity, and the church a home for gospel, a cornerstone of modern RnB and one of the first venues to house music’s holy qualities – a match made in heaven.
Cello player, Kelsey Lu’s musical upbringing in the church and incorporation of gospel, classical and contemporary RnB elements into her solo work is reflected in her prolific rise success. Signed to True Panther Sounds, the 26-year-old released her debut EP Church last year to wide acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The Fader and Nylon Magazine. Recorded in Brooklyn’s Holy Family Roman Catholic church with Chairlift’s Patrick Wimberly at the production helm, Lu’s rich, ethereal songs are set to soar in Paddington’s unique setting. Appearing on Blood Orange’s most recent Freetown Sound LP and Kelela’s Hallucinogen EP, the New York talent now makes her Australian live debut.
A fellow artist of religious upbringings with a deep-rooted connection to music and its place is Jack Grace. The producer, vocalist and songwriter takes inspiration from 90s echoes of trip-hop, footwork, gospel and post-dubstep, drawing comparisons between Thom Yorke and James Blake. Grace’s latest EP, River, has captured the attention of tastemakers at home and abroad.
Wollongong artist Bec Sandridge joins Lu & Grace with her guitar prowess and mesmerising spirit of iconic rock figureheads Debbie Harry, David Byrne and Stevie Nicks. With a recent EP, In The Fog under her belt, Sandridge’s anthemic concoctions of pop, punk, late 70s rhythms and fluttering vocals are a holistic experience raved upon by Rolling Stone, YEN and more.
