Preatures’ Gideon Bensen launches label, solo project
Armed with a new sound, his own record label and a new solo project, Gideon Bensen, vocalist and guitarist from The Preatures has released the track All New Low.
Premiered last night on Richard Kingsmill’s ‘2015’ triple j spot, and lifted from an upcoming EP, the bass heavy, hip-hop influenced release is a radical departure from The Preatures’ signature sound.
Produced by Tony Buchen(Montaigne, Mansionair) and with vocal help from Megan Washington, Bensen has stretched his sonic direction to bring an interesting blend of pop-punk electro. Enlisting Preatures guitarist Jack Moffitt andCarlos Adura(The Tambourine Girls) on drums, the song was mixed byMike Mogis(Bright Eyes, The Faint) and mastered byLeon Zervos(Wu Tang Clan, Beastie Boys).
Released through his own record Label Puncture Records, Bensens solo efforts are gaining interest by all involved. When asked about the project, Bensen stated “All New Low, took everything out of me.”
“While on tour with The Preatures, I found myself working on tracks more and more, up at all hours, in transit, in hotel rooms, wherever I could setup,” he said. “I was obsessed. I felt like I wanted to push myself more. I had some time in Sydney between tours so I contacted my old friend and producer,Tony Buchenwith some songs and ideas for an 80’s/90’s new wave/soul record. I told him, ‘if I do it I have to go all out.I don’t want to sound like I ever have before’.”
Playing one-off shows inMelbourne andSydney in February 2016, Bensen’s worthy passion project may just take priority come the new year.
