Australian Acts Top Apple Music And Shazam’s Year-End Lists For 2022
Aussie artists The Kid Laroi and Pnau take gold in the end-of-year charts published today (Nov. 30) by Apple Music and its sister business, Shazam.
Coming in at No. 1 on Apple Music’s most-streamed songs chart for 2022 is Laroi’s “Stay” with Justin Bieber, ahead of “As It Was” by Harry Styles and “Wait For U” by Future (featuring Drake & Tems), respectively.
“Stay” slayed sales and consumption charts around the globe, and collected a slew of awards for its efforts.
In the United States, “Stay” logged seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and 11 weeks atop the Billboard Global 200 tally.
“Stay” went on to win five Billboard Music Awards; a brace of ARIA Awards, including best artist for The Kid (real name Charlton Howard); the Rolling Stone Global Award, and saw the Sydneysider nominated for two Grammy Awards, including best new artist.
Meanwhile, Pnau continues to kick goals with its “remix” of Elton John and Dua Lipa’s “Cold Heart.”
The single, a No. 1 hit in the U.K. and Australia, reigns over Shazam’s annual list.
“Cold Heart,” a mashup of “Sacrifice,” “Rocket Man,” “Kiss the Bride” and “Where’s My Shoorah,” was the most-Shazamed song of the year worldwide in 2022, ahead of Heat Waves by “Glass Animals,” and “As It Was” by Harry Styles, respectively.
The single recently won an American Music Award, having already collected a Billboard Award for Top Dance/Electronic Song, and raced past one billion streams.
It’s the Rocket Man’s eighth No. 1 single in his homeland and first for 16 years, making the pop legend the first act in history to score a U.K. Top 10 single in six different decades.
In Australia, the single took 12 weeks to reach the summit. When it got there, it made Elton, at 74 years, seven months and 14 days, the oldest artist to top the ARIA Singles Chart, overtaking Paul McCartney.
It’s now Elton’s longest-reigning No. 1 in Australia, at 10 non-consecutive weeks.
“Cold Heart” also appears at No. 7 on the Apple Music’s most-streamed annual chart, and the Sydney trio are the only other Aussie act to crack the top 50.
Several homegrown artist appears on the Shazam tally, including Laroi’s “Stay” at No. 20; Shouse’s lockdown anthem “Love Tonight” at No. 38 and Gotye’s multiple Grammy Award-winning classic “Somebody That I Used to Know” (featuring Kimbra) at No. 50; while Australian-Japanese singer songwriter Joji appears at No. 71 with “Glimpse of Us: and Shouse drops in again at No. 77 with “Won’t Forget You (Edit)”.
Along with the publication of global and local charts for Apple Music and Shazam, Apple announces a redesigned Replay experience which, the tech giant says, offers its subscribers expanded listening insights, including a completely personalised highlights reel.
With the update, superfans can now discover whether they are in the top 100 listeners of their favourite artist or genre.
